Whiff of Joy Project of the month

It's that time again, hasn't it come around quickly!! What's happened to April, cos I blinked and missed it!

woj-pom-apr
Our Project of the Month for this month is to decorate a plant holder/pot and once again I was flummoxed (it's an age thing you know!!). Anyhoo, I cogitated and deliberated and was still flummoxed, went and had a mooch in the garden shed and unearthed this planter that had never been used. Wasn’t too impressed with the spiders in there and nearly broke my neck trying to get out the shed as quick as I could!!! And this is what I came up with. I decided to go with the vintage look so gave the planter a crackled finish.
woj-pom-apr-1
Here's what I used (please ignore the rub-ons, I decided not to use them after the photo was taken)
A plastic plant pot
Primer spray (as a base coat for the paint to adhere to)
Ivory or white acrylic paint (either crafters paint from Hobbycraft or plain old mat emulsion that has been watered down to a creamy consistency). I was going to use the white in the photo then decided to go with Ivory instead, I’m so contrary!!
Gold acrylic paint (or whatever colour you want the cracks to be)
Crafters crackle glaze (I used Inscribe but there are several different brands on the market, Hobbycraft stock some)
A matte acrylic varnish - any art store/large craft shop will stock this
woj-pom-apr-2
Spray your plant pot with a primer, a couple of coats should do, then apply two coats of gold paint. Allow to dry then apply a coat of crackle glaze. Again leave to dry.
woj-pom-apr-3
Then comes the fun bit - apply the top coat of paint. Use a wide paint brush and ensure the paint is applied in one direction only, top to bottom and DON'T go over what you have already painted - if you do you will land up with big blotches and a gloopy mess. If this happens, don't despair, the top coat will wash off easily and you can reapply.
woj-pom-apr-4
Once this is dry add a good few coats of acrylic varnish (I added 4 thin coats). Here's a close up of the crackle.
woj-pom-apr-5
I then stamped and coloured the image, and fixed to the pot by punching holes with a Stampin Up Slit Punch and threading ribbon through.
woj-pom-apr-6
The finished planter - the colour of the rose so doesn't go with the colour scheme of the planter and card, but it looked pink before the buds opened lol - that's my story and I'm sticking to it!!
woj-pom-apr-7

And the matching card

woj-pom-apr-8
Card Recipe:
Whiff of Joy Willow Kneeling stamp coloured with distress inks and H2O's
Papers: HOTP papers
Tools: Fiskars Apron Lace punch, Corner Punch, Stampin Up Slit Punch, Martha Stewart Branch Punch
Embellies: Dew drops, Cherry Blossoms

Thanks for looking,

  6. Fabulous project, love the crackle glaze - haven't been brave enough to try this yet. Gorgeous card and now I know why I couldn't get any pink cherry blossoms (lol) I'll have to dye my white ones.
Just think of spiders as friends - they eat those nasty flies.

  22. Hi Bev

    What a fantastic project.

To begin with I didn't think you had done anything with the plant holder other than attach that fantastic gift tag.

What a treat when I scrolled down the page and saw what you had actually done. It all looks brilliant.

Might try this at some stage - but not for a while unfortunately - but thanks for sharing the "know how" and the idea.

Have a great Bank Holiday break.

  26. wow Bev, great job! You wouldn't think it was once an old abandoned pot. I got a big bag of paints and varnish etc a few years ago from a friend who was an art student. Have never used any of it, but I think that bag will be coming out of the cupboard now!
    Thanks for the tutorial.
